Vaud, Switzerland's third most populous canton, is the economic and cultural heart of the French-speaking region. Stretching from the shores of Lake Geneva to the Jura mountains, it combines world-class innovation infrastructure with a diversified economic base that spans technology, food and beverage, life sciences, financial services, and tourism.

With a GDP of approximately CHF 57 billion and a population of 820,000, Vaud punches above its weight in the Swiss economy. The canton's crown jewel is EPFL, one of the world's top technical universities, whose Innovation Park has spawned hundreds of technology start-ups and attracted multinational R&D centers. This ecosystem has made the greater Lausanne area a European hub for deep tech, AI, robotics, and digital health.

The food and beverage sector is anchored by Nestlé, the world's largest food company, headquartered in Vevey. The broader Lac Léman corridor hosts a dense cluster of food multinationals, trading houses, and specialty producers. Viticulture in the Lavaux UNESCO World Heritage terraces adds to the canton's agricultural identity.

Life sciences are another pillar, with a growing cluster of biotech, medtech, and pharmaceutical companies. Biopôle in Epalinges serves as a dedicated life sciences campus, while CHUV (Lausanne University Hospital) anchors clinical research. The canton is home to Medtronic's European operations and numerous clinical-stage biotech firms.

Financial services benefit from Lausanne's role as a secondary Swiss banking center, complemented by emerging fintech and wealthtech ventures. Tourism is significant, anchored by the Olympic capital status, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and world-renowned hospitality education at EHL.

The labor market features one of Switzerland's highest rates of tertiary education (42.5%), reflecting the canton's knowledge-economy orientation. About 32,000 cross-border commuters from France supplement the workforce. Unemployment is slightly above the national average, typical for western Swiss cantons.

Succession planning presents a mixed picture. While the start-up ecosystem continuously creates new businesses, the traditional SME base in food processing, retail, construction, and services faces the same generational challenges as elsewhere in Switzerland. An estimated 5,800 companies need succession solutions in the coming decade.

Vaud's infrastructure is outstanding: EPFL Innovation Park, Biopôle, Y-Parc in Yverdon, proximity to Geneva Airport, direct TGV service to Paris, and the densest higher-education landscape in Switzerland outside of Zurich.
